Lahore is the capital of Punjab and Pakistan's second-largest city, set on the Ravi River. Its Fort and the Shalamar Gardens, seven kilometres apart, were together inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. The gardens were laid out under Shah Jahan in 1642.

Facing the fort's Alamgiri Gate is the Badshahi Mosque, built under Aurangzeb in 1671–73. Deeper in the Walled City, the tiled Wazir Khan Mosque stands among working bazaars. Both mosques are on Pakistan's UNESCO Tentative List. Lahore is also, by wide agreement, the country's great food city.
