Kalam lies 40 kilometres beyond Bahrain in upper Swat, where the valley narrows and the forest thickens. It is the practical base for the high side valleys: Ushu, Utror and Gabral are all reached from here.

The season is short and busy, which makes Kalam a useful test of how a mountain destination manages summer demand, from waste and traffic to riverside construction.
