K2 stands on the Pakistan–China border in the Karakoram, 8,611 metres of rock and ice in a near-perfect pyramid. It was first climbed on 31 July 1954 by Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli.

Most visitors come not to climb but to see it. The route runs from Skardu through Shigar and Askole, then for days over the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia, where K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums stand around a single junction of ice. The mountain lies within Central Karakoram National Park.
